FRY RECALLS HIS MAD DAYS
Barry Fry, the Peterborough United Director of Football, thrilled the “full house” of Westfields FC guests at their 24th Annual Sportsman’s Dinner at The Three Counties Hotel when the ex England Schoolboy International re-lived his footballing history to the attentive Westfields FC audience.
Fry re-lived his youth as a young 17 year old playing for England Youth International at Wembley in front of 93,000 spectators, to his first managerial position as manager of Dunstable Town in front of 42 spectators.
Fry recalled stories of transfer dealings with Harry Redknapp, scoring his only league goal when marked by the late great John Charles, to being interviewed by Birmingham City Director Karen Bradey for the “Blues” manager’s job, and his friendship with the late George Best.
“Barry Fry has an infectious personality and gave a motivational speech. He was certainly different to what we have had in the past 24 years but was hilarious and is a real football person”.
Fry also gave Westfields 2 tickets to any Peterborough United football match this season together with a pre-match meal and Directors’ Room hospitality at half-time and full-time. This was auctioned off by Westfields’ Chief Executive Andy Morris to raise £420 for Westfields Club funds.
“Barry has seen both sides of football, from the top with Birmingham City to the bottom with Dunstable Town so he knew where we were at Westfields and how we have to work to raise funds to run 10 teams at the grass roots level of football. He was a very generous man and appreciated what we do at Westfields for football in the community here in Hereford”.
