WESTFIELDS CELEBRATE 50th ANNIVERSARY SEASON
Westfields End of Season Players’ Presentation Evening went with a real swing when they held their event at the Burghill Valley Golf Club on Friday.
A packed house celebrated their 50th Anniversary and without doubt their most famous ever season in the 50 year history. The FA Cup dominated the evening with celebrations of their 8 match run in which time they picked up 2 awards as the FA Cup Team of the Round sponsored by Ladbrokes following their win over St Ives and then they also picked up the FA Emirates Trophy for the giantkilling act in the 3rd Round Qualifying when they beat Walton Casuals.
Westfields then went on to appear on Match of the Day with Andy Morris the Chief Executive appearing on national television at the live showing of the 1st Round draw in Manchester and the team beating Leiston to reach the 1st Round before they were finally eliminated in the replay at Curzon Ashton in Manchester.
Andy Morris the Chief Executive stated in his dinner speech “You could not write the script for this season. It was an amazing year and one that everybody can really be proud of. Everyone, from the club cleaner through to the bar staff, the tea ladies, the players, the committee and certainly the management and staff will go down in history in the club’s 50th year and everybody in this room tonight can be proud of their achievements. The season started a dream in our 50th Anniversary but ended in reality. To host Match of the Day and Football Focus, to appear on national and regional television as a club and then to receive the awards that we have from the Football Association and its sponsors really makes us feel extremely proud to be part of the football pyramid and to take part in the world’s greatest club competition, the Emirates FA Cup.”
Sean Edwards the team Manager said that whilst the FA Cup dominated the season and was certainly a moment nobody will ever forget we need now to knuckle down and go back to trying to win the Midland Football League next season which will be a hard task with the inclusion of Worcester City and Bromsgrove in the league next year but Sean along with his staff of Andy Beavan, Nathan Rivers and Scott Jackson all agreed that they could go forward with confidence at the squad they had and the players that they intend to bring in to the club.
Westfields were proud that every one of the squad was in attendance on Friday night, both the First Team and the Hereford Premier Team, as they celebrated what was a monumental occasion in the club’s 50 year history.
The club awards:
The Young Player of the Year was Sam Plane
The Golden Boot, First Team leading goalscorer, was Richard Greaves whilst Craig Jones picked up a double award having the Players’ Player of the Year and the First Team Manager’s Player of the Year.
The HFA Premier Division Player of the Year was Ashley Nelder.
A special award was also made to John Morgan the club Chairman who the club wanted to honour in the club’s 50th Anniversary season and also his work in looking after the logistics of the FA Cup campaign particularly with television crews and the security at allpay.park where the FA Cup came on no less than 4 occasions to Westfields for promotional and television days.
John Morgan stated “As club Chairman I’m very proud of our achievements and the committee and everyone connected with the club have worked extremely hard. However we can now move forward into a new era but we should look to encourage younger people to become involved with the club particularly on the committee to try and help take the club to the next level.”
Westfields had also received a 50 year celebration engraved glass plaque from the Herefordshire Football Association to mark their 50th Anniversary and reaching the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup, whilst the Midland Football League also presented Westfields Football Club with a similar acknowledgement in the form of a glass vase for their 50th Anniversary and to mark the special occasion of reaching the 1st Round of the FA Cup whilst members of the Midland Football League.
