Sportsmans Dinner another success
Thursday, October 08, 2009
Westfields’ 22nd Annual Sportsman Dinner was a complete sell-out with a record 310 guests at The Three Counties Hotel for the visit of BBC Match of the Day commentator John Motson and former Hereford United winger Ricky George. Motson gave an insight into his BBC rise from a junior reporter to working with David Vine, Peter West and Harry Carpenter and revealed his memorable BBC game with Hereford United and Newcastle and the “wonder strike” from Ronnie Radford and of course Ricky George’s late winner.
Ricky George was supporting Motson and gave an insight on how he arrived at Hereford. After 4 free transfers he joined from Barnett for a fee of £300 which John Charles paid for him. “Colin Addison moulded a great team spirit from the team that John Charles had left and our displays in the FA Cup and beating Newcastle will remain in FA Cup history for many years. It’s 37 years ago but people talk to me every week about that Newcastle game. I was so lucky to be part of it and it launched John Motson’s career”.
“The evening was a big success for Westfields. Our auction went well too with £400 raised on a Hereford United shirt signed by 8 of the Giantkillers plus John Motson while a special item of lunch for 4 people at the House of Commons with Paul Keetch MP raised £750. In these difficult economic times we received so much support from our sponsors allpay and BOSS the Dinner sponsors and all those firms who attended the Dinner” said Andy Morris, the club’s Chief Executive and auctioneer on the evening.
