AFC Wulfrunians v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, February 25, 2017

AFC Wulfrunians 2 - Webb 8, Turton 25
Westfields 1 - Reeve 75

Attendance 68

Westfields’ disappointing run of league results continued when they were beaten by relegation-threatened AFC Wulfrunians 2-1 away on Saturday in a match which was littered with mistakes.

Westfields dominated the game for long stages but couldn’t produce a goal to beat the Wulfrunians keeper John Bateman who had a five star performance for the home team including a fine save from a Craig Jones penalty midway through the first half.

Westfields started sluggishly and fell behind in the 8th minute when a suicidal pass across the penalty box by captain Phil Glover put Jake Webb in to coolly slot past Keiron Blackburn to give the home side a gift start.

Westfields’ misery continued when Glover committed a needless free kick just outside the penalty area and when the ball was floated in, Nicky Turton put AFC Wulfrunians further ahead from close range.

This goal gave the relegation-threatened Wulfrunians a big boost but they were then reduced to 10 men when their defender was sent off for handling the ball on the goal line.

However, Craig Jones saw his penalty kick saved by Bateman in the home goal to maintain the lead for the home side who went in 2-0 ahead at the break.

After the interval Westfields dominated the exchanges against the 10 man home side but could not get past the agile Bateman and central defender Tom Ray who gave an outstanding performance.

Westfields then changed the formation and brought on substitute Matt Reeve who within only a few moments pulled a goal back when shooting home from 18yds to set up a late rally by Westfields.

Glover then headed over the crossbar from 6yds out with the goal at his mercy and then Aidan Thomas shot into the side netting and Craig Jones also shot wide in a goal-mouth scramble.

Westfields did everything to try and rescue a point with a barrage of crosses which they failed to convert and in the end Wulfrunians breathed a sigh of relief when they gained 3 valuable points to ease their relegation fears.

Westfields now meet bottom of the table Brocton at home on Saturday in a bid to achieve a league win where they have seen only one Midland Football League win in the past 6 outings.
