WESTFIELDS LOSE ON A PENALTY
Westfields went out of the Polymac Services Midland Football League Cup last night away at league leaders Alvechurch to a penalty scored in the 46th minute by Alvechurch in an end-to-end exciting cup tie played at Lye Meadow last night.
In an exciting game which swung from end to end Alvechurch had the better of the early chances and Matt Gwynne in the Westfields goal made a superb point-blank save to deny the home side an interval lead when he saved a fierce header.
After the break Alvechurch took an immediate lead when Gwynne was adjudged to have brought down an Alvechuch striker and Alvechurch tucked away the resultant penalty.
Westfields then had a great chance to equalise when Phil Glover headed wide from a Chris Ham corner and then Ben Miller and substitute Julio de Mata both had shots kicked off the line as Westfields came storming back for an equaliser. Westfields forced Alvechurch back on the defensive but Jamie Willetts at the heart of the Alvechurch defence marshalled the league leaders’ defence brilliantly.
Alvechurch then had a great chance to increase their lead when they were awarded another penalty towards the end of the game but they shot wide from the spot-kick.
Westfields then mounted tremendous pressure to try and take the game into extra time and brought on substitutes Craig Jones and Dylan Bonella to try and penetrate the Alvechurch defence which held firm and withstood the late Westfields pressure.
Westfields now meet Shawbury United at home on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, when Nathan Hodge who was cup-tied for last night’s away trip to Alvechurch, will make his home debut against his former club Shawbury.
