WESTFIELDS LOSE IN WALES
Westfields opened up their 50th Anniversary season with their first pre-season friendly with a 2-1 away defeat at Welsh League side Caersws on Saturday.
The Welsh side scored in the 2nd and 88th minutes of an evenly contested game when Westfields gave debuts to full-back Sam Rawlings, signed from Shortwood United, and Jamie Molyneux, signed from Redditch United, while former Hereford FC player Sirdic Grant played an hour.
Westfields found themselves 1-0 down in the opening minutes when their keeper John Hopkins rolled out a clearance to Jamie Sauntson but he was quickly dispossessed and Mike Collister seized on the gift opportunity to put the Welsh side ahead.
Westfields hit back and after Molyneux and Aidan Thomas had gone close Westfields equalised through Craig Jones who finished off good work by Ben Miller.
Westfields then introduced Sirdic Grant and he quickly got into the thick of matters and was not far away with an acute angle drive that flew into the side netting.
Aidan Thomas then hit the Caersws woodwork as the sides went in 1-1 at the break.
After the interval James Baldwin forced a brilliant save from the home keeper then at the other end Matt Gwynne produced a flying save to prevent Caersws taking the lead.
The Welsh side were again prevented from taking the lead when Kane Kahaki cleared a shot off the Westfields line but in the 88th minute Caersws got the winner when a poor goal-kick by Gwynne was gathered by the home side and when the ball was played forward to Rhys Thomas he beat Gwynne with a low drive to give the Welsh side a 2-1 win with a late winner.
Westfields travel to Malvern Town on Thursday before hosting Bewdley Town at allpay.park on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, and Bishops Cleeve on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
