Coleshill Town v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Coleshill Town 3 Beckley, Weale, Leek
Westfields 1 Ham

Westfields and Coleshill produced a high tempo, top of the table clash in the Midland Football League last night in which Coleshill Town scored 2 late goals to clinch a 3-1 victory to put them hot on the heels of league leaders Alvechurch who lost at home last night in the league to Long Eaton United.

Westfields gave an extremely good account of themselves with a hard-working performance but were guilty of isolated mistakes which cost them dearly in the final result.

Mykel Beckley gave Coleshill Town a lead midway through the first half when he side-stepped the Westfields defence to coolly slot past Keiron Blackburn to give Coleshill the lead but Westfields hit back before the break and had good opportunities when Richard Greaves, Chris Ham and Aidan Thomas all hit shots wide of the target when through on goal.

After the break Westfields produced their best spell of the game and deservedly drew level when Richard Greaves was brought down in the Coleshill penalty area and Chris Ham coolly slotted home the penalty to put the 2 sides level at 1 apiece.

Earlier Alex Hainault had gone through on goal and should have put the sides level but his shot went agonisingly wide of the far post but Westfields then produced a good spell which should have seen them take the lead when Aidan Thomas, who caused constant pressure down the left hand side, fired into the side netting and Sirdic Grant and Craig Jones both had shots blocked by the home defence.

With the game looking likely to finish in a 1-all draw, Coleshill raised the game in the last 10 minutes when they snatched the lead with a pile-driver shot, which took a wicked deflection off a Westfields defender, by Tom Weale to put Coleshill 2-1 in front and then a mistake in the Westfields defence in the dying minutes when Keiron Blackburn put a goal-kick into the path of Kane Kahaki who was dispossessed by Reece Leek who went through solely on goal to put the issue beyond doubt and give Coleshill a 3-1 lead.

Westfields still came back in the final minutes and threw everything at the Coleshill defence in an effort to try and produce a late rally but Coleshill’s defence stood firm to give them 3 valuable points and move them closer to the league leaders Alvechurch.

On Saturday Westfields visit Shepshed Dynamo and next Wednesday, 5th April, Westfields are at home to Loughborough University in another Midland Football League encounter.
