Coventry Sphinx v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, October 25, 2014

Coventry Sphinx 2 - Jackson 19, Cain 45
Westfields 4 - Cuss 11, 55, 71, Polan 90+3

Westfields’ midfield dynamo Jamie Cuss returned to the team after a 2 week Mediterranean holiday to fire a hat-trick to give Westfields a 4-2 away win at Coventry Sphinx on Saturday.  Westfields’ win keeps them in 5th place and sets up an exciting home match at allpay.park on Saturday when 4th place Coleshill Town visit Westfields for a top of the table encounter.

Westfields were glad to see Cuss returning to the side in place of suspended Craig Jones, and Cuss only took 13 minutes to get on the score sheet when good work down the left flank by Joel Edwards ended with Cuss firing home at the far post.  Edwards then saw a header tipped over the bar by the Coventry keeper before the home side hit back with 2 goals before the interval when, after Matt Gwynne had produced a superb save at the expense of a corner kick, Coventry drew level when Ashley Jackson headed home at the near post.

Deqwon Eubanks then had a great chance to head back in front but he wasted a good chance from a Tom Boyce cross from 8 yards out.

Rob Drag and Zac Sirrell both had half chances to put Westfields ahead before Coventry Sphinx went ahead right on the stroke of half time when poor defending by Westfields allowed the home side to go 2-1 in front when a long range speculative effort by Ashley Cain eluded Matt Gwynne and bounced in at the far post to give Coventry the interval lead.

After the break Westfields started with more passion and desire and drew level early on when Jamie Cuss did superbly to take the ball on his chest after good work by Sam Gwynne and drilled the ball home low past the home keeper for the Westfields’ equaliser.

Sean Edwards then sent on twin striker substitutes Marcus Palmer and Dan Polan.  However it was goalkeeper Matt Gwynne who kept Westfields in the game when he saved brilliantly at the foot of the post to deny Coventry taking the lead, then the Westfields’ keeper saved at point blank range as the home side came back to put Westfields under pressure.

Joel Edwards then headed a Downes’ header off the Westfields’ goal line before Westfields took the lead when Zac Sirrell put Marc Palmer clear on the right and the ex Hereford United striker squared the ball back into the path of Jamie Cuss who fired home from 8 yards to put Westfields 3-2 ahead.

Westfields began to enjoy a good period and Palmer beat the Coventry keeper but his effort hit the post then Palmer was again prevented from extending Westfields’ lead when his clever shot was pushed onto the post by the home keeper.

Eventually Westfields got their deserved 4th goal when Dan Polan raced into the Coventry defence to take a ball from Tom Brock and hit a low drive firmly into the net to give Westfields a fine 4-2 away win.
