Coventry Sphinx v Westfields
MATCH REPORT - Saturday, January 27, 2018
Coventry Sphinx 1
Westfields 1 - Magee pen 90
HARRIS THE HERO
Westfields’ goalkeeper Alex Harris produced a superb display on Saturday to earn Westfields a 1-1 draw in their away trip to high-flying Coventry Sphinx.
Harris saved a penalty early on at Coventry after Sam Plane had hacked down former Barwell striker Jamie Towers and from then on Harris produced a series of fine saves to keep the promotion contenders at bay.
Westfields had had one opportunity to snatch a first-half lead when Richard Greaves headed over the bar following a left-wing cross by Jamie Molyneux.
Molyneux had also gone close on a couple of efforts as the 2 sides battled out the opening 45 minutes in heavy conditions.
However, after the break Coventry Sphinx snatched the lead with a wonder goal from a strike outside the box to put them ahead and then Harris again saved brilliantly at the foot of the post to deny them a second goal as they began to open up the Westfields defence.
The Westfields management then put on all 3 substitutes for Westfields, namely Ben Miller, Mark Magee and Kingsford Adjei, and it was Adjei who began to open up the visitors’ defence with some superb right-wing runs.
It was Adjei who created the best chance for Westfields when he out-paced the Coventry full-back, squared the ball back to Magee who had his shot blocked, and then the follow-up by Molyneux was also blocked as Westfields went all-out for an equaliser.
The equaliser eventually came right in the last few seconds when Westfields forced a corner and Westfields’ keeper Alex Harris raced up the field to join the attack and when the ball fell invitingly for him he was hacked down and from the resultant penalty Mark Magee found the bottom left hand corner to give Westfields a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw.
Westfields deserved their point which keeps them in a mid-table position and sets up nicely for this Saturday’s home match v AFC Wulfrunians when they have a great chance to gain a Midland Football League double, having beaten the Wolverhampton-based side 3-1 away from home earlier in the season.
Westfields also knocked out Wulfrunians in the First Round Qualifying of the FA Cup this year before they went on to beat Soham Town.
Westfields will also this week have Aidan Thomas back from suspension although skipper Phil Glover and Sam Gwynne are still ruled out, having one more game left to serve of their suspension.
