MATCH REPORT - Tuesday, May 01, 2018

Coventry United 2 - Palmer 2
Westfields 2 - Magee, Glover

WESTFIELDS PICK UP HARD-WORKING POINT

Westfields travelled to Coventry United last night and drew 2-2 in their penultimate Midland Football League Premier Division game of the season when a second-half goal from skipper Phil Glover secured a hard-working point after they trailed 2-1 at the break.

Westfields worked hard throughout the game with teenagers Carlos Moreira and Kingsford Adjei particularly impressive on the 2 flanks but it was the home side who took the lead on the half hour through Ryan Palmer who seized on a defensive error to go through unchallenged and beat the advancing Keiron Blackburn.

Blackburn then produced 3 stunning saves to keep Westfields in the game before Westfields drew level shortly before the interval when neat movement down the right hand side with swift interchanging passes between Moreira and Adjei found Mark Magee at the far post and Magee made no mistake with a hard drive into the bottom corner of the net.

However, right on the stroke of half time Westfields’ defence got in a tangle and with the team appealing for off-side Ryan Palmer went through unchallenged to beat Blackburn to give Coventry a 2-1 interval lead.

After the break Westfields came out very determinedly and worked hard and put the home defence under pressure but Tom Dyche in the Coventry goal twice fisted away menacing crosses to ease the pressure.

At the other end Keiron Blackburn again produced 2 full length saves to prevent the home side increasing their lead before Westfields got a deserved equaliser in the 80th minute when skipper Phil Glover headed home the equaliser.

Westfields then sent on substitute Ben Hayes and Hayes and Moreira continued to produce crosses and late in the game Glover was unlucky not to secure the 3 points when Dyche in the Coventry goal made a splendid save, then another effort was kicked off the Coventry line as Westfields looked like securing the 3 points.

It was a good team performance by the travelling Westfields side who now play their last game of the season on Thursday when they travel to Leicestershire to play Shepshed Dynamo.
