WESTFIELDS IN DRAMATIC FIGHT-BACK
Westfields fought back from being 2-0 down away at newly promoted Dunkirk when the Nottinghamshire side raced into a 2-0 lead with an hour on the clock on Saturday.
Westfields only had themselves to blame after squandering a host of chances in the first 45 minutes when they had enjoyed the better of the exchanges but twice Ben Miller was through one-on-one but missed the target and then the former Hereford youngster shaved the post with another good effort.
It was against the run of play when deep into stoppage time in the first 45 minutes Dunkirk seized the opportunity to open the scoring when Lony Romello Nangle from Notts County seized on a hesitant Westfields defence to prod the ball home to give the Dunkirk side an interval lead.
After the break Westfields again had an opportunity to level the scores when Miller glanced a header wide and then a Craig Jones effort shot past the post.
Dunkirk then increased their lead on the hour with a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area when George Harrison rifled home past an un-sighted Ian Havard to increase the Nottinghamshire side’s lead.
However, Andy Bevan then introduced substitutes Alex Hainault, Seth Antwi and Mark Magee and this injected fresh pace into the side and within minutes Magee had struck the Dunkirk post before Westfields pulled a goal back from the penalty spot when lively winger Carlos Moreira was brought down just inside the penalty box and Ben Miller dispatched his third penalty of the season to put Westfields back in the game.
Westfields then began to go flat-out in search of an equaliser and again an opportunity fell to Craig Jones whose effort was blocked before Westfields got their deserved equaliser 4 minutes from time.
After a series of corners a left-wing cross came into the penalty area and Alex Hainault rose high above the defence to head home powerfully into the top corner of the net for a deserved equaliser for Westfields.
Westfields then went flat-out in injury time to try and snatch a winner but the Dunkirk side, in particular the goalkeeper Alex Smith, worked hard to keep the visitors at bay.
Westfields now have a busy weekend coming up as on Saturday they make the long trip to Nottinghamshire again to play Long Eaton United and on Monday they face Romulus away, looking to gain revenge from the 6-1 drubbing that they had in the FA Cup earlier this month.
Please note that on 8th September Westfields’ home game with Quorn has been postponed due to the fact that Quorn are still involved in the FA Cup and will be on FA Cup First Round Qualifying duty that day.
Westfields have quickly rearranged a home fixture and will entertain basement club South Normanton from Derby, kick-off 3pm, at allpay.park.
