MATCH REPORT - Tuesday, September 11, 2018

Hereford FC 1 - Cullinane-Liburd
Westfields 3 - Cooper 2, Molyneux

WESTFIELDS KNOCK OUT CUP HOLDERS

Westfields produced a superb team performance when they visited Edgar Street for the first round of the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup last night and knocked out the current cup holders Hereford FC with a brilliant 3-1 away win.

Hereford, who have dominated the County Cup for the last 3 years, faced an in-form Westfields side who continued their good league form with another workmanlike performance.

Westfields broke the deadlock just before the interval when Keanu Cooper seized on a hesitant clearance by goalkeeper Joslain Mayebi and raced forward, beat the full-back and put the ball high into the net to give Westfields a 1-0 interval lead.  Prior to that Hereford had had their chances but Keiron Blackburn twice made tremendous saves to keep Westfields in the hunt.

After the break Westfields got off to a superb start when in the 55th minute former Hereford Bull Jamie Molyneux again seized on a mistake and raced forward on a fine solo run to again beat Mayebi with a cracking finish.

Westfields were dictating play and Carlos Moreira and Craig Jones were in fine form in midfield along with Matt Reeve who gave a Man of the Match display.

Westfields’ third goal was a superb flowing goal when Sam Gwynne linked up brilliantly with Jamie Molyneux and Molyneux swept forward with a fine interchange of passing and put the ball into the box where Keanu Cooper swept the ball home to give Westfields an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Hereford then sent on substitutes Billy Murphy and Jennison Myrie-Williams in an effort to bring something back into the game and did pull a goal back in a goal-mouth scramble following a right wing corner when Jordan Cullinane-Liburd swept the ball over the line.

However, Westfields continued to defend well as Hereford tried to force home a second goal and Keiron Blackburn twice made flying saves to deny Hereford at the Meadow end.

Westfields finished strongly but were reduced to ten men when Carlos Moreira was involved in a fray following a heavy tackle by the Hereford full-back Harry Franklin.  However, the ten men continued to play good constructive football and earned their placed in the second round of the County Cup with a fine win at Edgar Street.

Westfields: Blackburn, Sam Gwynne, Ollie Butler, Paul Hurrell, Sam Plane, Matt Reeve, Craig Jones, Keanu Cooper, Mark Magee, Carlos Moreira and Jamie Molyneux.

Substitutes: Alex Hainault and Josh Thomas for Molyneux and Magee.

Hereford: Mayebi, Franklin, Hall, Richards, Cullinane-Liburd, Harvey Smith, Bird, Callum Sainty, Harry White, Calvin Dinsley, Lance Smith.

Substitutes: Billy Murphy, Jennison Myrie-Williams.

Referee: Kevin Morris, Hereford.
