Highgate United v westfields

MATCH REPORT - Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Highgate United 2 - Brown, Revfin
Westfields 0

Westfields were beaten 2-0 away at early Midland Football League title favourites Highgate United last night despite the Westfields side giving a much improved performance on the 6-1 display at Romulus in the FA Cup.

Westfields held the home side to 0-0 at the break but did suffer disappointment when Phil Glover was badly injured in only the 15th minute and had to leave the field with a swollen knee but the re-shuffled side gave a workmanlike display and Ian Havard making his debut in the Westfields goal gave a solid display keeping out shots from danger-man Lei Brown.

Westfields worked hard particularly in defence with Sam Gwynne and Paul Hurrell both getting in timely tackles to avert the Highgate danger.

Westfields’ best chance fell mid-way through the first half when a good build-up found Craig Jones free outside the box but his left-foot drive flashed inches wide of the upright.

After the goal-less first half Highgate snatched the lead in the 55th minute when a superb cross from the right was met by Lei Brown at the far post and he scored with a fierce header.

Ten minutes later Highgate increased their lead when Kurtis Revfin unleashed a powerful shot across the face of the goal to leave Havard beaten and put the home side 2-0 in front.

However, Westfields never gave up and kept working away and Brad Catlow in the Highgate goal twice saved well from Magee and Molyneux before Westfields had a great chance to reduce the score-line 8 minutes from the end when they were awarded a penalty but Mark Magee saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Catlow at the foot of the right hand post.

Westfields then threw men forward in an effort to try and bring something from the game but Highgate defended soundly to complete their 4th game without conceding a goal.

Westfields have a great chance now to get back to winning ways when they are at home on Saturday to Shepshed Dynamo who are currently point-less and then on Tuesday they travel to league-leaders AFC Wulfrunians at Wolverhampton, kick-off 7.45pm.
