Horndean v Westfields
MATCH REPORT - Saturday, July 20, 2019
Horndean 4 - Everett 29, 38, 47, Jackson 52
Westfields 2 – Thomas 4, Howes (o.g.) 58
Westfields continued their pre-season programme with a visit to Horndean in Portsmouth for what proved to be another great workout for the lads against a quality outfit.
The first half was a fast paced evenly contested display of good passing football from both sides.
Westfields started strongly and were on the attack from the kick off with Matt Reeve passing into Ollie Price and the youngster played a great ball wide right for Sam Rawlings to run on to and deliver a great cross which was cleared by the home defence.
Jack Maloney then hit a 20 yard thunderbolt which Harvey Rivers was equal to in the Westfields goal.
It was Westfields that then took the lead in the 4th minute, turning defence into attack, Ryan Green cleared up to Dan Stoneman who played a good ball in the channel for Aiden Thomas to run onto and take round the keeper to finish from a narrow angle.
After a couple of good attacks down the left by Horndean which were cleared by the Fields’ defence, Ollie Price was upended on the edge of the Horndean box and Stoneman’s subsequent effort was flying into the top left corner of the home goal when Lloyd made a fantastic save to tip it round the post.
In the 29th minute the Dean’s drew level with an accurate 20 yard drive from Miles Everett which found the bottom left corner of the Westfields goal.
The game continued at a frenetic pace with both sides enjoying further attacks. In the 38th minute a clearance from the Fields’ defence fell to the feet of Everett 20 yards out, he struck a powerful shot and although Rivers got a good hand to it he was only able to tip it onto the post and in.
Westfields then went close to equalising when Green played the ball into Ollie Price who set up Aiden Thomas, his clever looping shot on the turn had Lloyd well beaten but went inches wide.
Half Time 2-1
The second half restart was in total contrast and Fields really didn’t get going and found themselves 4-1 down within 7 minutes.
When Harry Jackson received a good ball up the slope, he ran at Sam Plane and committed him before squaring to Everett who completed his hattrick with a smart curling finish.
Westfields were under pressure again moments later and a good point blank save from Rivers prevented them from going a further goal behind. However, 2 minutes later Jackson again ran at the Westfields defence and worked a yard from which to smash his shot hard and low to put the home side 4-1 up.
Westfields then started to steady the ship and in the 58th minute Dan Stoneman produced some good work on the right to beat the full back and his low driven cross was turned into his own net by the Dean’s skipper, Ash Howes.
The remainder of the game saw good football from both sides but the only opportunity of note came in the 89th minute when a good shot from Stoneman on the edge of the box was tipped round the post.
