Long Eaton United v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, April 15, 2017

Long Eaton United 3 - Toddy 7, 23, Dakin 90+2
Westfields 3 - Thomas 43, Ham 61, Glover 67

Westfields produced a great fight back from being 2-0 down away at Long Eaton United in the Midland Football League on Easter Saturday but then were hit by a killer punch in the dying minutes when Long Eaton hit back from being 3-2 down to equalise with the last kick of the game.

Westfields had fallen behind in the early stages when Toddy put Long Eaton in front when he seized on a hesitant Westfields defence to put the home side ahead and then in the 23rd minute he scored from the penalty spot after Kane Kahaki had been penalised for a trip in the Westfields penalty area.

However, Westfields came back and after a number of earlier attempts they pulled a goal back just on the stroke of half time when Craig Jones produced a defence-splitting pass which Aidan Thomas ran onto and coolly slotted the ball low past the advancing Long Eaton keeper.

This goal gave Westfields a great lift at the start of the second half and Chris Ham headed Westfields level in the 61st minute when he got on the end of a Ben Hayes free kick to head Westfields level with a classic finish.

Six minutes later, after Sam Plane had been brought down on the left hand side, Craig Jones whipped in a great cross and Phil Glover rose above the Long Eaton defence to head powerfully home to put Westfields in front.

Westfields then should have had the game sewn up as they dominated the match for long stages but right at the death the home side came back when Jordan Dakin equalised 2 minutes into injury time with a long-range effort after Westfields had got into a tangle with a last minute attack by the home side.

This game gave Westfields a 3-3 draw and sets up their away trip to Highgate on Wednesday very nicely and then the following Saturday Westfields travel to Tividale before they return to allpay.park on the last day of the season, being 29th April, when they host Walsall Wood who could be wanting to win that game to stave off relegation.
