Long Eaton United v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, September 01, 2018

Long Eaton United 1 - Goodson
Westfields 1 - Miller

Westfields travelled to Long Eaton for a Midland Football League Premier Division game on Saturday and came away with a point from a 1-1 draw which was a game which they clearly should have won comfortably.

Westfields dominated the match for long periods but could not press home their advantages particularly in the early stages when as early as the 2nd minute Ben Hayes had a great chance to put Westfields ahead but he missed from close range and then Carlos Moreira also had a great opportunity when first his shot was cleared off the line and then the follow-up shot hit the goalkeeper’s trailing leg.

Eventually Westfields took the lead in the 27th minute when Ben Miller fired home a shot from outside the penalty area which crept in at the near post, beating home keeper Scott Low.

Westfields should have then increased their lead when a superb ball in from Sam Rawlings on the left found Ben Hayes free at the far post but he headed agonisingly wide from 3 yards.

Long Eaton came back into the game and equalised just before the break when Zac Goodson netted after breaking free and rounding Westfields keeper Keiron Blackburn to put the 2 sides level at the break.

After the interval Westfields again had chances to have snatched the lead when Craig Jones fired wide and then both substitutes came on, being strikers Jamie Molyneux and Mark Magee, and they too had chances but Magee shot wide and then Molyneux headed straight at the keeper from 3 yards.

Westfields’ frustration continued when Magee ballooned the ball over the bar when well placed and then Craig Jones again shot wide when a winner seemed on the cards.

Westfields now travel to Romulus tonight, kick-off 7.45pm, and then on Saturday have a rearranged home fixture when South Normanton visit allpay.park, kick-off 3pm.

The following Tuesday, 11th September, Westfields make the short trip to Edgar Street where they play Hereford FC in the first round of the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup, kick-off 7.45pm, at Edgar Street.
