Loughborough University v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, April 07, 2018

Loughborough University 1 - Gordon
Westfields 1 - Jones

Westfields visited Loughborough University on Saturday in a Midland Football League Premier Division game and despite creating and enjoying the best parts of play they failed to capitalise on their excellent approach work and missed a host of chances to have secured an away win.

However, in the early stages it was the young Loughborough side that created the best chances and Keiron Blackburn had to go full length to save early on and then Ben Last broke away and had a great chance to put the Students ahead but fired wide.

Westfields then retaliated and Craig Jones went through on goal but his lob shot was easily saved by James Stallan in the Loughborough goal.

Westfields then created another great chance when a Carlos Moreira cross to the far post found Kingsford Adjei but his effort went inches wide of the post.

Westfields eventually took the lead when neat interplay resulted in Carlos Moreira providing a square pass for Craig Jones who finished with a left-foot shot to put Westfields ahead at the interval 1-0.

After the break Westfields enjoyed long periods of play but new striker Seth Antwi and Kingsford Adjei both had good opportunities to have increased the lead but their efforts went wide and then Craig Jones also had a great opportunity from 20 yards out but his shot went high and wide.

Westfields’ best chance to have increased their lead came 10 minutes from the end when a right-wing corner came in and skipper Phil Glover rose above the home defence but his header went wide of the upright.

Eventually the Students came back into the game and equalised 6 minutes from the end when substitute Joe Boachie got free down the left-hand flank and his square ball into the penalty area was slotted home by Cam Gordon to give the Students a point.

This was clearly a game that Westfields should have won and capitalised on their earlier good approach play but they paid the penalty for poor finishing.

Westfields now have a busy week when they travel to Rocester on Tuesday night, they host Coventry Sphinx at allpay.park on Thursday evening and then on Saturday they host the title-contenders Coleshill Town at allpay.park, kick-off 3pm.
