Westfields were hit by Lye Town super sub Nicky Anslow who came off the bench to win the game for Lye with 2 goals in the final 10 minutes on Saturday.  Westfields and Lye had both played the game for over an hour with 10 men after referee Paul Tyler of Worcester had dismissed Lye man Scott Gennard for a foul on Matt Reeve, then sent off Westfields’ striker Nathaniel Lewars for “raising his hands and pushing a Lye defender to the ground”.

Westfields could have no complaints with the result as they once again had Matt Gwynne in the Westfields’ goal for a 5-star display while Lye Town were more threatening and had the passing skills to win the match.

After a goal-less first half, when the only excitement was the 2 dismissals and 3 glaring missed opportunities by Westfields when Jamie Cuss, Zac Sirrell and Joel Edwards had chances to put Westfields ahead, the home side caught Westfields in the opening minute of the second half when a quick-moving attack saw Kevin Nickle race through the Westfields’ defence to put Lye Town in front with a cool finish.

Matt Gwynne then twice saved Westfields’ blushes with a brave save at the feet of Chris Russell then Gwynne brilliantly tipped a Damien Whitcombe free-kick over the bar to keep Westfields in the game.

Westfields in fact then drew level when Jamie Cuss was sent sprawling in the penalty area and Craig Jones put Westfields level from the penalty spot.

Gwynne again produced a flying save before Lye Town produced their “ace card” when Nicky Anslow came on and ran Westfields ragged to open up the Westfields’ defence.

Lye Town went ahead in the 80th minute when neat build-up play and some weak tackling attempts by Westfields’ defenders saw Anslow get through on goal and beat Gwynne with a low drive.

Westfields almost drew level but Stevens in the Lye goal produced a fine save to deny Craig Jones before Lye made the points safe when Anslow again went through easily on goal to beat Gwynne with another clinical finish to give Lye Town a convincing 3-1 home win and push them up to 3rd in the table with a comfortable win over a 10 man Westfields’ side that did not get into the game.
