Romulus v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Monday, September 03, 2018

Romulus 1 - Halil
Westfields 4 - Miller 2, Hainault, Molyneux

Westfields gained full revenge for their 6-1 drubbing by Romulus in the FA Cup when they returned to Castle Vale last night to record a superb 4-1 away victory in the Midland Football League Premier Division which saw the valuable 3 points take them to the top of the pile.

Westfields gave easily their best display of the season with a non-stop action-packed display led by 2-goal striker Ben Miller.

It was Miller who put Westfields ahead in only the 5th minute after Matt Reeve had been tripped in the Romulus penalty area and Miller sent Tyrell Belford the wrong way from the spot-kick to put Westfields ahead.

However, the home side drew level 5 minutes later when hesitancy in the Westfields defence saw Bekir Halil slam the ball home from close range to put the sides level.

However, Westfields continued their forceful attacking play and regained the lead in the 32nd minute when Ian Havard found a long clearance from his own penalty area which found Jamie Molyneux free on the right and Molyneux’s clever back heel into the path of Alex Hainault saw the Canadian slam the ball home from the edge of the penalty area into the roof of the net to give Westfields a 2-1 interval lead.

After the break Westfields continued their storming display and after Belford in the home goal had saved brilliantly from Craig Jones and Alex Hainault, Westfields increased their lead with another superb goal when Craig Jones put Ben Miller free on the left and Miller cut in and unleashed a tremendous left-foot shot into the bottom corner of the net to give Westfields a 3-1 lead.

Romulus came back into the game and good defending by the Westfields defence kept the home attack at bay until Westfields increased their lead when Jamie Molyneux got on the end of a through ball and went through on goal to fire the ball low past the home keeper to increase the Westfields lead to 4-1.

This was easily Westfields’ best display of the season and sets them up now nicely for their home match on Saturday when South Normanton are the visitors to allpay.park, kick-off 3pm.

Next Tuesday Westfields make the short journey to Edgar Street to play Hereford FC in the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup first round tie, kick-off 7.45pm at Edgar Street.
