Rugby Town 1 - Kolodynski
Westfields 2 - Jones 2
WESTFIELDS MAKE IT THREE ON THE TROT
Westfields continued their impressive form by getting their third Midland Football League win in a week when they followed on from their success over Stourport and Sporting Khalsa by gaining an impressive 2-1 away win at Rugby
Town on Saturday.
Westfields, in their first ever visit to Rugby Town, fully deserved their valuable 3 points which beat the promotion-contenders and hoisted Westfields up to a top 10 position.
Westfields had to battle all the way over an impressive Rugby Town side who took the lead in the early stages when the Midland Football League’s leading goalscorer, David Kolodynski, volleyed home into the roof of the net after a quick interchange of passes down the right flank.
Westfields had to defend for long periods and Alex Harris in the visitors’ goal twice cut out menacing crosses to deny Rugby Town a second goal before Westfields drew level on the half hour when Carlos Moreira was brought down just outside the penalty area and Craig Jones rifled home a fierce left-foot free-kick into the bottom left-hand corner to put Westfields level.
This goal seemed to give Westfields confidence and the visitors battled back to go into the interval all square at one each.
After the break both sides played fast attractive football but Westfields snatched the lead in the 53rd minute when Aidan Thomas saw a powerful left-foot shot parried by Niall Cooper in the Rugby goal and Craig Jones raced in to hammer the rebound over the line to put Westfields 2-1 in front.
Westfields then pressed forward and had a great opportunity to make it 3-1 when Ben Miller was put free but his lob shot went straight into the hands of Cooper.
Rugby Town came storming back and twice Matt Sysum headed clear dangerous crosses and then Kane Kahaki blocked a powerful shot from Harry Holloway as the home side looked to try and get an equaliser.
Rugby threw everything forward but could not get past a ten-man Westfields defence as Sam Gwynne, Kane Kahaki, Matt Sysum and Sam Plane all defended well in front of the reliable Alex Harris who again saved the day with a tremendous catch under pressure to thwart the danger.
Westfields really battled back and almost snatched a goal towards the end when Jones almost claimed his hat-trick when his right-foot shot went narrowly wide.
These valuable 3 points set up Westfields’ Easter programme as after playing Rocester at home on Wednesday night Westfields have 2 difficult away trips over the Easter programme with a visit to Coventry United on Easter Saturday and a local derby with Worcester City on Easter Monday.
