WESTFIELDS FORCE A REPLAY IN FA CUP
Westfields forced a nil-nil replay away at Isthmian League side Soham Town Rangers on Saturday when they visited Cambridgeshire and recorded a nil-nil draw from a hard-working team performance.
Westfields, bidding to progress in the F A Cup, will now face an Emirates F A Cup First Qualifying Round Replay on Wednesday night at allpay.park, kick-off 8pm, when the Cambridgeshire side visit Westfields for the replay to see who progresses into the Second Round Qualifying.
Westfields had to defend well in the early stages as Soham Town Rangers forced three corners, one of which Keiron Blackburn did well to palm over the bar and the others Phil Glover and Matt Sysum dealt with brilliantly by heading clear the dangerous crosses.
Westfields’ best chance fell in the opening stages to Sam Plane who joined the attack but headed wide from a free kick and then Richard Greaves also saw a header flash across the face of the goal.
Both sides put up stubborn defences in the first half but in the second half the game opened up and both sides had chances to have broken the deadlock. Firstly Westfields’ substitute Hayden Turner was put through on goal but the home keeper, Josh Pope, did well to block the shot and then at the other end Soham had a great chance to snatch the lead when Sam Gwynne was penalised and gave away a dangerous free kick on the edge of the box which flashed inches over the bar.
Both sides went all out in the final stages and Aidan Thomas had a header go just over the bar while Soham also flashed a shot wide of Keiron Blackburn’s upright.
Both sides will now return to the FA Cup on Wednesday with the replay at allpay.park, kick-off 8pm.
