Sporting Khalsa v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, October 20, 2018

Sporting Khalsa 0
Westfields 4 - Jones 2, Cooper, Molyneux

Westfields produced their best performance of the season when they hammered Sporting Khalsa 4-0 away at Wolverhampton on Saturday.

Sporting Khalsa had won 9 consecutive matches on the bounce but found Westfields a tough nut to crack and in fact Westfields gave a superb display from start to finish to justify 3 valuable points and a top of the table position.

With Worcester City beating the current leaders Ilkeston Town, Westfields leap-frogged Ilkeston into top spot and Worcester City moved up into second spot as the promotion race begins to warm up.

The first half saw defences on top although Jamie Molyneux and Ben Miller both had opportunities to have opened the scoring but failed to beat Sam Arnold in the Khalsa goal.

At the other end former Alvechurch striker Lee Chilton and danger-man Dave Meese both had opportunities to open the scoring for Sporting Khalsa but on one occasion Chilton shot wide of the goal and secondly Meese saw his shot brilliantly cleared by Paul Hurrell.

In an action-packed first half on the 3G surface Westfields lost both Matt Reeve and Oli Butler through injury and they had to be replaced by Ben Hayes and Sam Gwynne who slotted into the workmanlike team very well.

After the break Westfields broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when Craig Jones joined the attack and slotted home a shot from just inside the penalty area with a right foot drive.

Then Westfields scored an absolute screamer in the 54th minute when home keeper Sam Arnold made a clearance from the edge of his penalty area which only found Keanu Cooper 40yds out from goal who brilliantly controlled the ball and sent in a fabulous loft shot over the Khalsa keeper to put Westfields 2-0 in front.

This then saw Westfields take command of the game and play some really good, open attractive football and in the 68th minute Westfields went 3-0 ahead when Jamie Molyneux got onto the end of a defence-splitting pass to round the defender and shoot past the home keeper to put Westfields into a 3-0 lead.

Molyneux and Jones were producing great interplay between each other and causing the Khalsa defence big problems and it came as no surprise in the 74th minute when Molyneux produced a superb pass into the path of Craig Jones who slotted home Westfields’ 4th goal and his second of the match.

Sporting Khalsa were trying hard to keep in the game and preserve their 9 match unbeaten record but they were foiled on a couple of occasions when Keiron Blackburn went full length to parry shots and then Paul Hurrell and Kane Kahaki got in tremendous tackles on the edge of the penalty area to snuff out the Khalsa attack.

Westfields’ performance was easily their best of the season and gave them a 4-0 win and saw them go a point clear at the head of the table.

Westfields now play 2 important home games this week with a home game tonight, Monday 22nd October, against Quorn, kick-off 7.45pm, and then next Saturday they’re at home at allpay.park to Coventry United, kick-off 3pm.
