MATCH REPORT - Tuesday, February 07, 2017

Sporting Khalsa 1 - Ceesay 81
Westfields 1 - Jones 85

Westfields produced a much improved display at Sporting Khalsa when they held the FA Vase quarter finalists to a 1-1 draw at Willenhall last night.

Westfields’ manager Sean Edwards swept the changes from Saturday’s disappointing 2-1 away defeat at Quorn and the changes paid off with Alex Hainault and Matt Reeve joining Craig Jones in an impressive midfield line-up.

Westfields had the better of the first half and twice Chris Ham escaped his marker and once fired narrowly over the bar and the other saw his shot well saved by the Sporting Khalsa keeper.

Aidan Thomas was dangerous down the left flank and Ben Miller also caught the eye with a couple of very useful crosses whilst at the other end Matt Gwynne produced a superb save at the foot of the post to keep the score-line blank at the interval.

After the break both sides played wide attacking football and it looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw when in the 81st minute a Westfields attack was broken up and Sporting Khalsa swept away and Ceesay scored with a low shot which squirmed in to the bottom of the net.

This goal looked as though it was going to steal the points for Sporting Khalsa but Westfields hit back immediately and when a Nathan Summers shot thumped against the crossbar Craig Jones rushed in to slam the ball over the line for the Westfields equaliser.

With just 3 minutes to go Westfields kept up the pressure in search of the 3 points and Chris Ham produced a fine left wing run to square the ball back to Craig Jones who narrowly failed to connect with the cross with the goal at his mercy.

Westfields then had to survive an onslaught from Khalsa in the dying minutes including injury time and both Nathan Summers and Phil Glover produced fine defensive qualities to keep the home attack at bay.

This was a much-improved Westfields display and an excellent away point.

Westfields now face Heanor Town away on Saturday and next Wednesday are at home to Coventry United in another Midland Football League game.
