WESTFIELDS FIGHT BACK FOR A POINT
Westfields fought back from being 2-0 down on Saturday away at relegated club Tividale who stormed into a 2-0 half-time lead but Westfields produced a much better second-half display which was more determined and in fact should have won the game handsomely.
Westfields got off to a dream start but were guilty of some appalling finishing when Aidan Thomas went round the Tividale keeper, Lewis Handley, in the 5th minute but shot wide and then Craig Jones took a pass from Sirdic Grant but he too fired wide of a gaping goal.
It was against the run of play that Tividale opened the scoring when James Febery misplaced a pass into the path of Elliott Hartley who ran 50yds to beat the advancing Keiron Blackburn to put Tividale 1-0 ahead.
Westfields were in more trouble on the half hour when captain Phil Glover was penalised for hand-ball just outside the penalty area and Chris Bladen whipped in a free-kick over the Westfields wall to put the home side 2-0 ahead at the break.
After the interval Westfields made an immediate response when Alex Hainault, who had come on as substitute for Matt Reeve, fired home from 12yds to reduce the arrears and then Hainault, who was in constant action, hit the Tividale post when another opportunity arose.
Westfields dominated long periods of play although in one isolated attack Tividale broke free and Keiron Blackburn in the Westfields goal produced a point-blank save to keep Westfields in the game.
Wingers Sirdic Grant and Aidan Thomas were a constant threat to Tividale but their crosses could just not be converted as Craig Jones, Richard Greaves and Chris Ham all had good opportunities to have put Westfields level.
However, with the minutes ticking away Westfields pulled level when in another flowing move Aidan Thomas got on the end of a cross and fired home through a ruck of players to put Westfields level at 2-2.
Westfields then threw everything forward in an attempt to gain a much-needed win but Richard Greaves headed wide and Aidan Thomas shot into the side netting when well placed.
Westfields really did deserve to win this one but in fairness to Tividale, who are anchored at the foot of the table and already relegated from the Midland Football League, defended as though their lives depended on it and held out for a 2-2 draw.
This Saturday Westfields entertain Walsall Wood at allpay.park, kick-off 3pm, in a most interesting game as Walsall Wood need a point from this game to be sure of beating the drop and Westfields will certainly want to finish the season with a win.
Westfields will also present their Supporters’ Player of the Year Award after the game when all supporters will be given a voting slip on arrival at the ground.
Westfields will also officially be opening their Anniversary Stand which has been constructed by Metclad of Nottingham and Truland Construction of Hereford thanks to the support of the FA 1966 Grant Award, support from Metclad and support from Life Member Mr R F Marshall.
Life Member Ron Marshall will cut the official tape of the new Anniversary Stand before the game.
Westfields’ Supporters Club Draw for the month of April will also take place at half-time with £300 worth of prizes.
