Walsall Wood v Westfields

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, February 23, 2019

Walsall Wood 2 - Roberts, Butlin
Westfields 2 - Mills, Gwynne

TOP OF THE TABLE CRACKER

Westfields travelled to Walsall Wood, who currently are second in the league table, to play an important Midland Football League match on Saturday and came away with a point from a 2-2 draw.

Both sides served up a hard-working end-to-end league game with both sides having opportunities to have won the game but in the end had to settle for a point apiece as both goalkeepers had outstanding games.

The large crowd at Walsall were entertained from start to finish and it was Westfields who broke the deadlock halfway through the first half when a fine through-ball from Craig Jones saw John Mills take the ball well, beat the centre-half and goalkeeper and go through to score into an empty net.

However, Walsall came back into the game and levelled before half time with a spectacular goal as the sides went in one each at the interval.

After the break, Joey Butlin put Walsall 2-1 ahead before the home keeper made fine saves from Aidan Thomas, John Mills and Craig Jones to keep Walsall in the game.

Walsall Wood then had a great chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty but Blackburn produced a flying save with his legs to keep out Butlin’s effort and this save changed the game.

Westfields then began to attack well down both flanks with Aidan Thomas and Ben Miller both prominent and they drew level in the 80th minute when they were awarded a penalty for hand-ball in a goal-mouth melee but Mills saw his penalty kick brilliantly saved by the home keeper but Sam Gwynne rushed in to slam home the rebound to put the sides level at 2-2.

In the final ten minutes both sides had opportunities to have won the game as Walsall twice saw crosses go agonisingly in front of a gaping goal and then at the other end the Walsall keeper, who had a fine game, saved brilliantly from Aidan Thomas and John Mills when it looked as though Westfields would steal the 3 points.

In the end both sides settled for a point apiece to keep the Midland Football League promotion race still alive.

This Saturday Westfields are at home to Loughborough University who beat Westfields 3-1 away earlier in the season so Westfields will be going out for revenge and at the same time maintain their challenge on the top 2 places.
