WESTFIELDS WIN NINE GOAL VASE THRILLER
Westfields came from behind to win a nine goal thriller in this FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Round Qualifying tie with fellow MFA league side Bridgnorth Town at allpay.park on Saturday when a hat trick from Paul Allam and a goal apiece from twin strikers Paul Glover and Daryl Addis earned Westfields a 1st Round Proper home tie with West Midland league premier division team Bromyard Town on 19th September at allpay.park.
In an action packed end-to-end opening first half Westfields opened up a 2-0 lead but the Shropshire visitors hit back with 3 goals to go in at the break 3-2 ahead.
Westfields got off to a flying start when Jamie Addis put over an 11th minute cross and Phil Glover tucked the ball away at the far post.
Then in the 20th minute Westfields were two goals ahead when in a tremendous goal mouth scramble Paul Allam bundled the ball over the line to give Westfields a dream start.
However, Bridgnorth came storming back to score three times in the space of twenty minutes when Gareth Horler volleyed goalwards and Jon Pugh tried to palm the ball over the bar but it dropped agonisingly into the roof of the net.
Bridgnorth then pulled level with a tremendous header from “Man of the Match” Darren Leonard who headed powerfully past Pugh when getting on the end of a left wing free kick.
Bridgnorth were causing the Westfields defence some awkward moments and went into the lead in the 42nd minute when Gareth Horler chased a through ball and chipped the ball over Tom Sparey and volleyed past Pugh to put the visitors 3-2 ahead at the interval.
After the break Westfields were soon level when Paul Allam headed home a Jamie Addis cross to put the two teams level but 5 minutes later Bridgnorth had regained the lead when Tom Sparey handled a left wing cross and Jason Pike scored from the penalty spot to put Bridgnorth 4-3 ahead.
In a “ding dong” Cup tie Westfields came back again when the lively Jamie Addis created an opening for Paul Allam to side foot Westfields level for his hat trick and create a grandstand finale.
Then the best goal of the game came in the 68th minute when good work by Jamie Cuthbertson and Jamie Addis saw Addis put his brother away and Daryl Addis coolly beat the Bridgnorth keeper with a low shot into the corner of the net to put Westfields back in front 5-4.
Westfields should have put the tie beyond doubt when Sam Harrison made a tremendous run only to be brought down in the Bridgnorth penalty area but Mark Hibbard saw his “spot kick” brilliantly saved by Fletcher in the visitor’s goal to keep Westfields on tenterhooks for the last ten minutes.
Manager Sean Edwards used three substitutes to try and bolster the team and Westfields defended well to secure a dramatic 5-4 home win and earn a home tie against Bromyard on 19th September at home.
