WESTFIELDS MISS CHANCES - PAY THE PENALTY

Westfields entertained relegation-threatened Brocton on Saturday and were beaten 2-1 with a last minute goal after Westfields had missed a host of early chances to have won the game comfortably with an impressive opening first-half display.

Westfields opened up smartly and had 3 good chances all within the first 20 minutes which fell to the feet of Sirdic Grant but his finishing let him down and then mid-way through the half Westfields had a great chance to open the scoring when Craig Jones had a penalty brilliantly saved by the visiting keeper Ashley Lunn.

This was Jones’ 3rd consecutive penalty which had been saved by the opposition keeper.

Brocton went in at the interval 0-0 wondering how on earth they hadn’t been 3 or 4 goals behind.

After the break Brocton came more into the game when they were awarded a free kick and Dan Lomas headed home at the near post to put the visitors ahead.

Westfields threw everything at the Brocton goal and Craig Jones hit the bar from 2 yards out then Lunn in the Brocton goal saved brilliantly from Aidan Thomas and again from Richard Greaves who seemed certain to score.

Craig Jones then fired wide of the target before Westfields snatched a dramatic late equaliser when Julia da Mata charged down a clearance from the Brocton defence and the ball ran free to Craig Jones who made no mistake from 10 yards out.

This then set up a grand finale in the last 2 minutes when the visitors broke away and scored when Nick Wellecomme rifled home a right wing cross after Brocton had caught Westfields with a counter-attack.

Westfields then had run out of time and slumped to a disappointing defeat leaving them with just one win in their last 10 league and cup matches.

On Tuesday Westfields travel to Highgate United, kick-off 7.45pm, for a Midland Football League game and next Saturday they are at home to Long Eaton United, kick-off 3pm, at allpay.park.
