Jones Spot on as Fields Win

A wet and windy night at allpay.park saw Westfields soldier through into the next round of the MFL League Cup after overcoming a spirited Causeway United team. It wasn’t the most attractive game of Football as both teams found it difficult to deal with the slick surface.

Westfields come out of the blocks in a confident manner, despite the wet surface they tried to maintain their passing style of play. Both Marcus Palmer and Strike partner Michael Bent were looking lively up top as they looked to put pressure on the Causeway back four.

Fields could have been in front within the first 25 minutes, Tom Boyle sent his low driven shot into the Keeper before Michael Bent found space in the box where he sent his right footed shot wide of the Goalkeepers near post. Zac Sirrell & Luke Griffiths were having success down the right hand side, both using their knowledge and speed to get beyond the full back. Various crosses were produced but failed to lead to any clear cut chances.

Causeway came close to going in front, but luckily for Fields Goalkeeper Matt Gwynne was in top form as he smartly saved the shot with his feet.

The lack of clear chances summed up the First Half as neither team could go into the break with the lead.

Half Time: Westfields 0-0 Causeway United

An open start to the Second Half saw Causeway create two early chances. Luckily for Fields one deflected over the top of the cross bar and the other was sent fizzing well wide of the far post.

Unfazed by Causeway’s early chances, Westfields Central Midfielders Craig Jones & Matt Reeve continued to spread the play out to Sirrell and Boyle on their respective sides. It was Boyle who was causing the most harm when he sent his shot just wide of the post. Boyle continued the pressure as he controlled a Jones pass before firing the ball across the box.

Part of Boyle’s success was down to Left Back Dean Lee whose direct attacking runs allowed allowed Boyle space out wide to exploit the Causeway Defence.

Moments before the goal, Fields could have pulled in front when Joel Edwards latched onto a Boyle cross, but saw his weak header easily saved by the Causeway Keeper.

As the 67th minute hit, Fields got the goal they were looking for. As Nathaniel Lewars chased a through ball he was taken down by the onrushing Causeway Keeper. After a two minute delay to treat the injured keeper, Craig Jones stepped up to take the Penalty before calmly sending the Keeper the wrong way, this is nothing new to Jones who has seen himself score from the spot on many occasions this season.

Causeway’s search for an equaliser was harder than expected as every avenue they went down the ever present Joel Edwards was there to halt their progress.

Craig Jones’ Penalty was enough to see Fields hold on for the win and progress through to the Third Round of the MFL League Cup.
