WESTFIELDS FIGHT BACK FOR A POINT

Westfields had to hit back twice on Saturday against visiting Coventry Sphinx to earn a Midland Football League point when a last minute goal by Richard Greaves salvaged the game which looked to be slipping away from the home side.

Westfields had fallen behind in the 12th minute to a Callum Woodward goal as he put the visitors ahead and then Westfields had tried to get back into the game but they found the Coventry Sphinx defence on form and the visitors led at the break 1-0.

After the interval Westfields hit back when Chris Ham pulled back the equaliser with a fine goal after Richard Greaves, who had been introduced into the attack, dummied the ball to allow Ham to go through unchallenged to score the equaliser.

This gave Westfields fresh impetus and with Sirdic Grant causing problems on the right hand side along with clever wing play from Aidan Thomas it looked as though Westfields would sneak the lead.

Coventry Sphinx then had their goalkeeper Scott Dutton to thank when he saved brilliantly from an Aidan Thomas left foot drive and then somehow the Coventry keeper miraculously saved a fine header by Sirdic Grant at the near post when Westfields looked like taking the lead.

However, it was against the run of play that the visitors broke away to score their 2nd goal when the lively Woodward snatched an opportunity to put Coventry 2-1 ahead.

With the clock ticking it looked as though this goal was going to be enough to give Coventry Sphinx revenge for the 3-2 win that Westfields secured at Coventry earlier in the season but late in the game Dutton in the Coventry goal brilliantly saved a pile-driver from Craig Jones and the ball ran free to Richard Greaves who seized the opportunity of blasting Westfields level at 2-2 in the 89th minute.

Westfields then did everything to try and snatch the winner in injury time but the Coventry Sphinx defence, particularly goalkeeper Dutton, were in sound form.

Final score – Westfields 2 Coventry Sphinx 2.

Next Saturday Westfields travel to AFC Wulfrunians and the following Wednesday, 1st March, are at home to Hereford Lads Club in the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup semi-final tie with the winners playing Hereford FC at a date to be agreed.
