Westfields v Coventry United

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, October 27, 2018

Westfields 2 - Moriera, Magee pen
Coventry United 2 - Soleman, Ellis

Westfields were held to a 2-2 draw at home on Saturday in the Midland Football League Premier Division when visiting Coventry United put up a stubborn performance.

Westfields have now won just one of their last 8 Midland Football League games and surprisingly Andy Bevan left strikers Jamie Molyneux and Mark Magee on the bench but in the second half he introduced them to the game and they both had vital parts to play in the 2-2 result.

Westfields started well, as they have done in previous weeks, but missed a number of opportunities to have put the visitors to bed when Ben Miller and Keanu Cooper along with Josh Thomas both had good opportunities to have opened the scoring and put Westfields comfortably into the lead before the break.

However, a goal-less first half saw both sides then produce attacking displays in the second period and when Molyneux and Magee were introduced to the home attack the goal-scoring opportunities were seized upon when Molyneux had a pile-driver brilliantly saved by the visitors’ keeper and Carlos Moreira was on the spot to tap home the opening goal for Westfields from the rebound.

Westfields then looked capable of increasing their score-line when first Craig Jones had a shot charged down before Moreira made way for Magee to be introduced alongside Molyneux.

However, the visitors got more into the game and in the 72nd minute they drew level when Arum Soleman scored from a deflected shot and then a minute later Coventry United seized the lead when Curvin Ellis put Coventry 2-1 in front.

However, Westfields came storming back and had a number of opportunities from well placed free kicks before another free kick produced a shot from Craig Jones which was handled in the penalty area and Mark Magee seized the opportunity to put Westfields level at 2-2.

Westfields then threw men forward in a desperate attempt to take the lead but the Coventry defence held firm as both sides settled for a point a piece.

On Tuesday night Westfields travel to Racing Club Warwick in the second round of the Midland Football League Cup and next Saturday Westfields are at home again when they play Romulus in the second round of the FA Vase.  They will be looking to beat Romulus who naturally knocked Westfields out of the FA Cup at the first preliminary round stage back in August.
