LATE JONES DOUBLE SAVES FIELDS CUP RUN

After being a hero on Saturday, Jamie Cuss nearly became a villain when he was sent off this evening. Luckily Craig Jones was on hand with two late goals to put Fields into the HFA Senior Challenge Cup Semi Final.

Early attacking pressure from Fields saw the emergence of new signing Michael Tambling who was at the heart of the majority of opening attacks. Carl Morgan was first to test the Fownhope Keeper but saw his effort go directly into the Keepers body.

Fields continued to push forward but could only pull off two half a chances as both Lewars and Cuss saw their efforts fail to work the Fownhope Keeper.

As a scrappy first half was coming to an end Fownhope’s first chance of the game fell to their Number 6 who after some great play from his teammates saw his shot fly high over Wargent’s crossbar.

Credit where it is due to the Fownhope back four who kept the game level going into Half Time.

HALF TIME: Westfields 0-0 Fownhope

An inspirational team talk must have happened in the Fownhope dressing room at Half Time as they started the better of the two teams. An early chance was wasted when a shot from the edge of the box was sent over the bar.

To the fans dismay Fownhope took the lead in the 53rd minute, pinball in the Westfields box saw the ball fall to the unmarked Ben Price who saw his effort bundled over the line despite the presence of Morgan on the line.

The game was nearly all over for Westfields when Jamie Cuss was sent off for kicking out at Fownhope Defender Sam Lewis.

A much needed reality check for Fields saw them throw everything at Fownhope, as trying to walk the ball in the net didn’t seem to work Fields tried a more direct approach. They equalised in the 67th minute when Tom Boyle flicked the ball over the Defenders head and towards Craig Jones whose faintest of touches with his head saw the ball roll into the far corner.

As the game was coming to an end Fields manage to nick the winner and their place in the Semi Final when Craig Jones poked his shot past the Goalkeeper. Some great running by Morgan saw him pop the ball of to Jones who was in space to poke to ball in.

This Jones winner was enough for Fields to progress through to the next round. Fownhope deserve a lot of credit, for a team several levels below Westfields they showed great character and were really unlucky not to get something from the game.
