MATCH REPORT - Saturday, January 06, 2018

Westfields 1 - Molyneux 28
Hamble Club 4 - Lynch 46, 63, Watts 60, 80

WESTFIELDS BOW OUT OF THE FA VASE

Westfields were surprisingly defeated 4-1 at home by visiting Hamble Club from Southampton on Saturday in the 4th Round of the Buildbase FA Vase when a disappointing second-half performance saw the visitors run away with the game.

Westfields had enjoyed the better of the first-half exchanges when Jamie Molyneux had clipped the top of the crossbar in only the 5th minute but Molyneux then put Westfields ahead from close range in the 28th minute to give them a good lead.

Westfields then had 3 clear-cut chances to have increased their lead when twice Ben Hayes had great opportunities to have added to the score line and then Craig Jones shot narrowly wide as Westfields clearly had the best opportunities in the first-half.

The visitors did have one guilt-edge effort when Nathan Lynch headed over the crossbar when well placed.

However, after the break Lynch made amends when he put Hamble Club level within minutes of the second-half and then Nick Watts made it 2-1 as the visitors began to step up their game.

Westfields then lost Sam Gwynne for an alleged elbow incident and then Nathan Lynch added a 3rd goal with a header at the far post as the visitors began to take control.

Hamble Club then began to get into the faces of Westfields with some good strong tackling and gave the 10-man Westfields side very few opportunities to get level and it came as no surprise when Nick Watts seized on a defensive lapse by Westfields who were trying to play the ball from the back and the ball was intercepted and Watts had the easiest task to beat Keiron Blackburn from close range.

Westfields were then reduced to 9 men when skipper Phil Glover was sent off for a scything tackle on the Hamble striker and Westfields finished disappointingly with a 4-1 defeat against the Southampton visitors who were delighted to go through to the last 16 of the Buildbase FA Vase.

Westfields now have to concentrate on their league performances and next Saturday’s away trip to Coleshill Town has been postponed due to the fact that Coleshill are engaged in an FA Vase replay with Newcastle Benfield on that particular date.
