WESTFIELDS FIGHT BACK AT THE DOUBLE
Westfields produced a superb second-half revival to fight back from being 3-1 down with an hour on the clock to win 4-3 in an exciting Total Motion Midland Football League Premier Division game with visiting Haughmond from Shrewsbury last night.
The win gave Westfields their first Midland Football League double of the season, having beaten Haughmond 2-1 away in August.
Westfields had to produce a hard-working second-half performance after a disappointing first-half display had left them trailing 2-1 at the break and then after 5 minutes into the second period Westfields founds themselves trailing 3-1 before they staged a dramatic fight back.
Earlier in the first half the visitors, Haughmond, had snatched the lead only for Richard Greaves to pounce and equalise mid-way through the first half before Haughmond took the lead again with a brilliant header from a left-wing corner.
After the break the visitors increased their lead to 3-1 when, after John Hopkins had brilliantly saved a low drive and then Kane Kahaki had cleared off the line, they managed to get the ball home to put them 3-1 ahead and in a commanding lead.
However, Westfields fought back and reduced the arrears when Mark Magee scored from the penalty spot after Matt Sysum had been pulled down by the visitors’ keeper.
Then Ben Miller put Westfields level at 3 apiece with a superb goal from an acute angle before, in a grandstand finish, Aidan Thomas who’d come on as a substitute crossed into a crowded goal-mouth and with everyone piling in to force the ball home it appeared that Jamie Molyneux got the final touch to secure a dramatic 4-3 win and 3 valuable home points and their first Midland Football League double of the season.
