WESTFIELDS GO OUT OF COUNTY CUP
Westfields put up a fantastic performance in their local derby match v HFA County Senior Challenge Cup holders Hereford FC in the Second Round tie on Wednesday evening but went out narrowly 2-1 in a good end-to-end cup tie.
Westfields had the better of the first half with the crossbar saving Hereford when Matt Sysum rose above the visitors’ defence but saw his header smash against the crossbar shortly before half time. Earlier than that Westfields had opportunities but both Ben Miller and Aidan Thomas saw shots flash across the face of the goal.
At the other end former Westfields striker Jamie Molyneux had 2 good chances to put the visitors ahead but saw both his shots squandered.
After the break Hereford came out of the blocks the best and took the lead when Westfields were caught from an in-swinging corner by Jamie Bird whose corner crept inside the near post to put the visitors ahead and then moments later Lance Smith scored to put Hereford 2-0 ahead from close range.
However, Westfields came back into the game and scored the best goal of the game in the 75th minute when substitute Dan Polan reduced the arrears when former Hereford youngster Carlos Moreira got free on the right, beat his defender and crossed to the far post where Aidan Thomas ran in and squared the ball into the path of Dan Polan who finished off the move brilliantly to bring the scores back to 2-1.
Then Westfields put on further pressure but could not break down the Hereford defence to force extra time.
Westfields’ performance was only marred in the dying seconds when captain Phil Glover was sent off following 2 yellow cards when he made comments to the referee Kevin Morris and was dismissed.
