Ilkeston Town 2 - Walker, Marshall
WESTFIELDS MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CLOSE THE GAP
Westfields Football Club met league leaders Ilkeston Town on Saturday at allpay.park but were narrowly beaten 2-1 in a closely fought end-to-end fixture.
Both sides worked hard to get the maximum points to earn the right to go forward for the rest of the season but it was Ilkeston Town who completed a league double over Westfields and set them up nicely now with a huge lead at the top of the table to make them hot favourites for promotion.
Westfields had their opportunities on a wind-swept day but Ilkeston, urged on by their large travelling supporters amongst the 208 spectators, took the 3 points with a narrow victory.
The league leaders got off to a tremendous start in the opening minutes when Ilkeston were awarded a free kick from 40yds out which Jamie Walker hit hard into the penalty area and the ball flew past Keiron Blackburn to the give the visitors a dream start.
Westfields maintained good pressure with balls flashing across the penalty area with crosses from Ben Hayes and Aidan Thomas but Westfields drew level in the 30th minute when Jamie Molyneux was brought down on the right hand side of the penalty area and Craig Jones curled a low free kick into the bottom corner to put the 2 sides level at the break.
After the interval, manager Andy Bevan brought on Carlos Moreira and within minutes the winger had a great opportunity to put Westfields ahead when Ben Hayes put over another tantalising cross which Moreira got on the end of but agonisingly saw the ball scoop over the bar from 3yds out.
This miss proved to be costly as in the 76th minute Ilkeston got what proved to be the winning goal when Tom Marshall headed home a Reeves cross after Ilkeston had taken a short quick corner.
Westfields still had opportunities to get back into the game and Craig Jones shot agonisingly wide from the edge of the penalty area and then the Ilkeston keeper twice made flying saves to keep the visitors in the game.
In an end-to-end fixture Westfields then were reduced to 10 men with just 2 minutes remaining when Paul Hurrell, Westfields central defender, committed his second cautionable offence and was sent off for receiving 2 yellow cards.
Westfields still remain in second place but now have a mountain to climb if they are to challenge for the league title and a promotion place.
Tonight Westfields go to Romulus in the Midland Football League Cup third round tie and then on Saturday are at home to Boldmere St Michaels in the Midland Football League, kick-off 3pm, and the following Saturday are at home to Lye Town, again in the Midland Football League, kick-off 3pm.
