Westfields v Leiston

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, October 15, 2016

Westfields 2 - Glover 59, Greaves 86
Leiston 1 - Winter 75

Attendance 741

Westfields recorded their most memorable result in their 50 year history to reach the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup with incredible scenes at allpay-park on Saturday when they beat Ryman Premier Division unbeaten league leaders Leiston in an exciting end-to-end Emirates FA Cup 4th Round Qualifying game.

The tie produced a gate of 741 with the supporters having the FA Cup Trophy on display and witnessing classic cup football from the first to the last minute.

After a goal less first half when Leiston had been kept at bay by Keiron Blackburn in the Westfields goal, the game burst into life when in the 57th minute a Craig Jones free kick was glanced home by Phil Glover with a header to break the deadlock.  Craig Jones and Richard Greaves then went close before Leiston finally got past a resolute Westfields defence and Tom Winter equalised to set up an anxious period of play.

However, Westfields regained the lead when Richard Greaves rifled home a low shot after good work by Ben Miller, to set up a nail biting final 5 minutes but referee, Ian Rathbone, played an agonising 7 minutes injury time in which Leiston threw everything at Westfields but skipper Phil Glover, later named man of the match, was superb in marshalling the Westfields defence to keep Leiston at bay and earn an historic 1st Round Proper tie on Saturday, 5th November.
