Westfields v Long Eaton United

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, January 10, 2015

Westfields 1 - Cuss 33min
Long Eaton Utd 0

Attendance 184

Westfields pulled off one of the results of the season as they beat League leaders Long Eaton 1-0 at allpay.park. Jamie Cuss’ moment of genius was enough to down the league leaders and get Fields league form back on track.

Long Eaton provided early pressure at the Fields back four and saw a Penalty appeal waved away as James Febery took down the attacker on the edge of the box.

Fields provided pressure of their own as they went forward in search of the first goal. Some excellent build up play around the Long Eaton box saw the ball fall to Luke Griffiths whose weak effort was cleared off the line by a recovering Defender.

Moments later Long Eaton Striker Jermaine Palmer went through on goal and produced a smart save from in form Fields Stopper Gwynne. The robust Palmer was proving to be a intelligent player, attempting to use his size as an advantage against Febery and Winstone, luckily for Fields the two Centre Backs were doing their best to keep him out.

As the 33rd minute approached Fields took the lead; a long ball down field was latched onto by Jamie Cuss who looked up before elegantly lofting the ball over the head of the advancing Keeper. Cuss nearly doubled the lead shortly after but disappointingly dragged his shot wide of the far post.

A flurry of Long Eaton corners just before Half Time threatened the Westfields goal, but they were unable to put the ball into the back of the net.

HALF TIME: Westfields 1-0 Long Eaton United

Minutes into the Second Half Matt Reeve was denied by a reaction save from Cameron Mason, the energetic Reeve wriggled into the box before sending his shot straight into the path of the onrushing Mason.

It was chances galore for Fields who again came close as some great play from Cuss saw the ball played across to Palmer whose slightest touch put the ball into the path of Boyle who somehow put the ball over from 4 yards out.

Long Eaton’s best chance of the Half fell to TJ Nightingale, the pacey Striker skipped past the Fields back four before dragging his shot wide of Matt Gwynne’s far post.

Continued pressure from Fields was showing their dominance throughout the whole game. James Febery came close, but saw his glancing header fly inches past the post.

As the game drew on Fields looked to slow play down in attempt to see out the game, passes heading for both corners saw Long Eaton grow frustrated as some bad tackles started to go in on the Westfields players.

Long Eaton’s frustration was shown 3 minutes before time when Defender Ross Parker was sent off for a horrific tackle on Dean Lee. Parker’s sending off came moments after he received his first yellow card for a bad tackle on a Westfields attacker.

Parker’s red card made it easier for Fields to see out the game and pick up a much needed three points.
