Fields suffer Second Leg Defeat

Westfields let a First leg lead slip to lose to Long Eaton United in the Midland Football League Cup Semi Final.

Fields started in a lively fashion as they looked to get another goal on the score sheet and kill the game off.

It wasn’t long before this happened. Fields took the lead when Jamie Cuss surged into the Long Eaton box before laying the ball across the Luke Griffiths who tapped home from 4 yards.

Fields early goal was a real wake up call for Long Eaton who were threatening to go forward, possession high up the pitch wasn’t bringing any danger to Rivers in goal.

A flurry of Fields chances continued to threaten to Long Eaton goal, Cuss fired just wide of the post moments before James Febery saw his header cleared off the line. The pressure continued as a Corbett free kick landed just wide of the far post.

It was a while coming but Long Eaton finally test the Westfields goal when Striker Shaun Rickford who hit the managed to strike the bar from inside the 6 yard box.

Moments before Half Time Long Eaton pulled a goal back through Chris Jones. An in swinging corner created chaos in the Westfields box before finding it’s way to Goalkeeper Harvey Rivers who patted the ball into Jones who headed home.

The Half time break couldn’t have come at a better time for Westfields as they looked to hold onto their lead. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case as Long Eaton pulled level in the 50th minute.

A dubious free kick decision given against Harvey Rivers lead to Long Eaton’s goal. The referee adjudged Rivers to have caught a back pass intentionally, which was astonishing as the ball went 30 foot into the air. From the resulting free kick Centre Back Ross Parker fired a low drive into the bottom corner.

With the away goals rule being applied Long Eaton would go through meaning it was an uphill battle for Fields.

Parker’s goal spurred Fields on as they continued to pressurise Long Eaton’s back four. Both Cuss and Boyle looking dangerous but failing to put any pressure on the Long Eaton goal.

In a last ditch attempt to take the game to extra time Manager Sean Edwards through on the experienced Marcus Palmer and employed a 4-3-3 tactic in order to get that goal. The attacking tactic lead to a Craig Jones free kick but he struck his shot wide of the post.

Fields had one last chance to get something out of the game when the ball fell to James Febery inside the box, but the Centre Back struck his shot high and wide.

After dealing with spells of intense pressure Long Eaton held on to book themselves a place in the Final.
