Westfields v Long Eaton United

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, March 30, 2019

Westfields 3 - Butler, Jones, Mills
Long Eaton United 1 - Campbell

Westfields recorded their first Midland Football League home win of 2019 on Saturday when after a series of home defeats and home draws they secured 3 valuable points to maintain their position for a top 4 finish with a 3-1 home win over visiting Long Eaton United from Nottingham.

Westfields had to recover from being a goal down at the break when an 8th minute goal by Cameron Campbell put the visitors 1-0 ahead but in the second half Westfields restored their pride and gave a more determined performance when second half substitutes Sam Gwynne and Carlos Moreira injected pace and urgency into the side which produced 3 goals and a home win for their supporters.

Westfields had opportunities in the first half to have opened the scoring but Aidan Thomas and Ben Miller both saw chances go awry before the visitors took the lead when sloppy defensive play gave Campbell the opportunity to blast Long Eaton in front.

After the break however Westfields clicked into gear and pulled level when John Mills got free down the left hand side and cut the ball back into the path of Ollie Butler who slammed home the ball from 8yds to put Westfields level.

This signalled Westfields to produce a more workmanlike performance and Aidan Thomas then had a shot parried by the visitors’ keeper but the ball ran nicely into the path of Craig Jones who put the ball firmly in the back of the net to put Westfields 2-1 ahead.

Westfields were now beginning to cut open the Long Eaton defence with Moreira and Aidan Thomas both causing problems down the flanks and it came as no surprise when late in the game Mills was on hand to get the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble to secure Westfields’ 3-1 win.

This result keeps Westfields up in 4th spot but they are now without a game for several weeks and their next home fixture will be on 22nd April (Easter Monday), kick-off 3pm against local rivals Worcester City.

Westfields then travel to Coventry Sphinx on 27th April before finishing the season at Edgar Street on 30th April with an HFA County Senior Challenge Cup Final against Pegasus Juniors.
