Westfields v Loughborough University

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, August 07, 2010

Westfields 2 - Cuss, D.Addis
Loughborough University 2 - Webb, Cavey

Attendance 123

Westfields’ new look MFA league team were unlucky not to get a win at their first attempt on Saturday but they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to visiting Loughborough University in an entertaining first match of the new season.

Westfields included new signing Bobby Aldrich from Gloucester City while his brother Nicky Aldrich was in the Loughborough line-up at allpay.park.

Both sides played good attacking football on a superb playing surface at allpay.park but it was the students who were first to score when they grabbed a 10th minute lead when a right wing cross was flicked on by Nick Cavey and Danny Webb raced in to head home a well worked set piece.

However Westfields were soon level when Brendan Hazlett in the Loughborough goal dropped a through ball and Jamie Cuss seized on the opportunity to squeeze the ball home from an acute angle to put the sides level in the 15th minute.

Cuss then almost put Westfields ahead on the half hour but his shot was cleared off the line while at the other end Nick Cavey almost put the visitors ahead but he saw his shot hit the Westfields’ crossbar as the two sides went in level at the interval.

After the break Jamie Cuss again saw an effort scrambled off the Loughborough goal line then Daryl Addis burst through on goal but Hazlett made a superb save from Addis who seemed certain to score.

Westfields were enjoying their best spell and Jamie Addis had a shot superbly saved by the students’ keeper before Westfields eventually went ahead in the 67th minute when Carl Morgan produced a fine cross to the far post and “Man of the Match” Jamie Cuss headed against the Loughborough crossbar but Daryl Addis was quick to react and headed in the rebound.

Westfields then created further chances and Jamie Addis was again foiled by the Loughborough keeper with a wonder save then Lee Ferneyhough should have wrapped up a comfortable win when he had a great chance with a far post header but he headed wide.

Then as Westfields appeared to be heading for a narrow win Loughborough drew level in the dying minutes of injury time when Jamie Moore parried a Daniel Webb shot and the ball fell nicely for Nicholas Cavey who tucked away a late equaliser for the visitors to give them a share of the spoils with a dramatic late equaliser from an opening MFA end-to-end game.
