Westfields v Loughborough University

MATCH REPORT - Wednesday, April 05, 2017

Westfields 0
Loughborough University 3 - Ward-Cochrane 50,57, Trotman 89

Attendance 111

Westfields Football Club were given a stern lesson last night by visiting Loughborough University who overwhelmed Westfields with a convincing 3-0 win with a superb second-half performance which should ease their relegation fears.

Loughborough, needing to win to escape the drop into the bottom 3 in the table, gave a superb second-half performance which Westfields had no answer to.

However, in the first-half Westfields had played some good attacking football but failed to take their opportunities when Sirdic Grant hit the post from close range and then Chris Ham fired up and shot over the bar whilst Ben Hayes also missed a great opportunity to put Westfields in front.

When the Students came back shortly before the break Matt Gwynne in the Westfields goal twice produced full-length saves to deny the visitors the opportunity to open the scoring.

After the break the Students really stepped up their game and played some lovely fast-flowing soccer and took the lead through danger-man Ben Ward-Cochrane who seized on a mistake by Kane Kahaki and ran through the Westfields defence to fire low past the advancing Matt Gwynne.

Seven minutes later it was all over for Westfields when Ben Ward-Cochrane again got free and scored from a tight angle.

Westfields were struggling to make headway against a well-organised Loughborough team who looked far from a side fighting a relegation battle and it came as no surprise when Loughborough put the game beyond doubt in the final minute when Luke Trotman overlapped on the right hand side and squeezed home a shot from an acute angle.

A disappointing second-half performance by Westfields who now face a difficult period of 4 away games before they complete their Midland Football League programme with a home game on the final Saturday in the season at home to Walsall Wood on 29th April.  Westfields visit Lye Town on Saturday, who are still chasing a runners-up spot, and the following Saturday visit Long Eaton United.
