MATCH REPORT - Tuesday, August 05, 2014

Westfieds 4 - Whittall-Williams 2, Boyle, Jones (Cuss missed a penalty)
Lye Town 0 - (Evitts sent off for Lye)

ATT: 162

After a disappointing opening day defeat away at Long Eaton United, Manager Sean Edwards set his team up to stay solid at the back to stop goals from being conceded and this is exactly what they did when they triumphed against a physical Lye team.

Lye Town had the majority of possession within the first 5 minute down at Allpay Park with two half chances falling to both of their strikers, but not enough to trouble Fields Keeper Matt Gwynne. Fields started to gather momentum as the game went on but couldn’t make it count when a scuffed chance from Dean Lee ended up a few yards wide of the post.

Penalty to Westfields- A lovely curling ball down the wing fell into the path of the very pacey Dean Lee who proceded into the box before being cut down by the Defender. The penalty was taken and missed by Jamie Cuss with a very weak effort being stopped by Damien Stevens.

10 minutes before Half time the game then turned sour when Lye’s number seven Kallum Evitts got sent off for a two footed challenge on right back Sam Gwynne. A quick attack down the right hand side saw tricky winger Dean Lee cut inside before sending a powerful left footed shot over the crossbar.

HALF TIME- Westfields 0-0 Lye Town

Fields took their momentum gained towards the end of the first half into the opening minutes of the second half and this showed with Fields having the majority of the possession and creating a lot of attacking movements.

Pacey attacker Tom Boyle beat the offside trap before sending a powerful shot straight into the keepers body. Westfields then pulled in front when a Tom Brock cross met the head of Dene Whittall-Williams who headed the ball back across into the far top corner. Fields then pulled two ahead when a long ball down the pitch slid through to Tom Boyle who beat the on rushing Keeper to the ball before tapping home from 2 yards.

Fields scored a third goal 5 minutes later with a Whittal-Williams lay back to the on coming Craig Jones who sent a thunderous left foot strike into the top right hand corner and out of reach of the outstretched arm of Damien Stevens.

Lye had their only clear cut chance of the half when Scott Gennard went one on one with Matt Gwynne before tamely shooting into his hands. Lye struggled to get a foot hold in the second half with Fields growing stronger as the game went on and this was backed up when a corner that was swung in was met by the towering Whittall-Williams who sent a header flying past the helpless Lye Keeper Stevens. Lye looked to tire in the final few minutes allowing Fields to hold on in a comfortable manner.
