Westfields v South Normanton

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, September 08, 2018

Westfields 2 - Magee, Moreira
South Normanton 0

Westfields went 2 points clear at the top of the Midland Football League Premier Division when they overcame visiting South Normanton Athletic 2-0 on Saturday at allpay.park.

Westfields had beaten South Normanton at their Derbyshire headquarters on the opening day of the season 1-0 with a Mark Magee goal and it took the Westfields substitute just 30 seconds to score on Saturday when he came off the bench to net Westfields’ opening goal and set up a first league double of the season.

Westfields had to work hard to gain their 3 points against a lively visiting side who dominated the exchanges for the first 10 minutes when Ian Havard in the Westfields goal twice made splendid saves to keep out the visitors’ attack.

Firstly he tipped over the bar a glancing header and then went full length to pull off a superb save in the top right hand corner of the net from an explosive free kick.

Westfields enjoyed long periods of pressure but were frustrated by some good defending as Molyneux and Ben Miller were both thwarted with their efforts.

After the break and with an hour gone Westfields still had not produced a goal but Andy Bevan made the master stroke by bringing on twin substitutes Carlos Moreira and Mark Magee and the 2 strikers who replaced Molyneux and Cooper took little time to make an impact.

Magee was on the spot from 6yds to put Westfields ahead in the 65th minute when he shot low past the advancing Hall but then Hall produced a series of fine saves to keep Westfields at bay as the home attack seemed to get going with the lively Carolos Moreira twice going close but Hall was able to keep out his efforts.

South Normanton tried to get back into the game but found Westfields’ defensive back 4 sound and then in the last minute Westfields made the points safe when Magee unleashed a tremendous shot from 12yds which Hall again acrobatically saved but the ball ran free to the lively Moreira who was on the spot to bang home the rebound to give Westfields 3 valuable points and take them to the top of the league.

Westfields now travel the short distance across to Edgar Street on Tuesday night to meet Hereford FC in the first round of the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup and next Saturday play a rearranged game when they entertain Coventry Sphinx at allpay.park, kick-off 3pm, in a top of the table encounter.

Sphinx are currently up in 3rd place and will naturally prove lively visitors.
