Westfields v Rocester

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, March 25, 2017

Westfields 1 - Hayes 42
Rocester 2 - Wesson 29, Szondi 44

Attendance 158

Westfields suffered a 2-1 home defeat to visiting Rocester who gained revenge for the previous week when Westfields won 4-2 away at Rocester.

Westfields attacked well from the start but could not convert early chances and it was the visitors who snatched an early lead through Steve Wesson in the 29th minute when a dangerous free kick came into the penalty area and Nathan Summers headed it back towards his own goal and Wesson nipped in at the far post to tap the ball over the line for a gift goal.

However, Westfields battled back and Richard Frogatt in the Rocester goal twice cut out menacing corners and then saved at full length with an Aidan Thomas shot before Westfields drew level shortly before half time when Thomas got down the left wing, cut in brilliantly and put over a perfect cross for Ben Hayes to race in and tap over the line from 6 yards.

This signalled a revival just before the break but Westfields conceded a sloppy goal right on the stroke of half time when Seb Szondi converted a left wing cross after Westfields had failed to clear their lines.

Westfields had also lost influential mid-field player Craig Jones with a calf injury early in the first half and also defender Jamie Sauntson had to be replaced but both substitutes Sam Gwynne and Kane Kahaki provided influential appearances.

In the second half Westfields began to dominate the game but could not beat the lively Frogatt in the visitors’ goal and despite constant pressure Westfields had chances when Chris Ham twice went close and also Sirdic Grant had an opportunity at the far post which he fired into the side netting.

Westfields looked as though they were going to get an equaliser with continual pressure and even moved Nathan Summers up into the attack to try and add height but Frogatt produced then a breath-taking save late in the game when he tipped over a goal-bound effort from Chris Ham to secure all 3 points for Rocester who eased their relegation worries and left Westfields still in 5th place.

On Tuesday night Westfields go to second place Coleshill Town and then next Saturday make the long journey to Shepshed Dynamo before returning to allpay.park on Wednesday 5th April when Loughborough University visit allpay.park.
