Rocester 1 - Smyth 80

WESTFIELDS HELD BY BOTTOM CLUB

Westfields were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-threatened Rocester at allpay.park last night when despite an opening start when Westfields took the lead in the 10th minute they failed to break down the resilient visiting defence who had made the 108 mile journey from Rocester for the evening fixture.

Westfields had to battle well in the end to hold onto a point as the Staffordshire club gave everything in an effort to gain the 3 points to ease their relegation worries.

Westfields, without the suspended Matt Sysum and James Febery, got off to a tremendous start when Aidan Thomas cut in from the left and laid on a pass to Craig Jones who finished perfectly with a left-foot shot to put Westfields ahead in the 10th minute.

Westfields then threatened and the visitors’ keeper Charlie Wood did exceptionally well by tipping over an Aidan Thomas shot to prevent Westfields increasing the lead.

Gradually Rocester came more into the game and recalled keeper Keiron Blackburn had to deal with a couple of long-range efforts before Phil Glover cleared a low shot off the Westfields goal-line.

After the break Westfields continually failed to break down the resolute visitors’ defence despite wing-men Carlos Moreira and Aidan Thomas trying hard to break down the flanks.

Westfields then thought they had increased their lead when a Phil Glover shot from outside the penalty area was cleared off the line by a Rocester defender but then the visitors broke away and equalised with a cracking goal from Martin Smythe who beat Keiron Blackburn with a low angled drive to put the 2 sides level.

Rocester then pushed men forward in an effort to gain the 3 vital points that they required and Blackburn went full length to push another shot from Smythe around the post before Westfields then pushed forward in the last 5 minutes in an effort to find a last-ditch winner.  However, they found Charlie Wood in top form when he saved from Ben Miller to make sure that the visitors went home with a vital point.

Westfields now face a busy Easter when they travel to Coventry United on Saturday and then visit local rivals Worcester City on Easter Monday, kick-off 3pm, at Bromsgrove Sporting.
