WESTFIELDS WIN AT THE DOUBLE

Westfields treated their loyal supporters to a 4 goal salvo for their last home game of the season when they competed tremendously well over visiting 6th place Rugby Town to record a Midland Football League double over the visitors.

Westfields had won 2-1 away at Rugby earlier in the season and recorded a tremendous win over the high-flying visitors.

Westfields’ win hoisted them up to 7th place in the league table as they produced a tremendous attacking display where Mark Magee fired Westfields into a 12th minute lead before he added a 2nd goal from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after Carlos Moreira had been brought down.

Earlier, David Kolodynski had pulled a goal back for Rugby with a tap-in at the far post and then just before the interval Keiron Blackburn made a brilliant penalty save to deny Rugby Town an equaliser.

Westfields then retaliated well and Aidan Thomas put Westfields further ahead with a great finish to put Westfields 3-1 ahead but Rugby came storming back and pulled a goal back just before the break to reduce the arrears as Westfields led 3-2 at the interval.

The second half kicked off at a cracking pace and danger-man Aidan Thomas fired Westfields 4-2 in front and this lifted Westfields tremendously as they began to open up the Rugby defence but Rugby never gave in and defended well with their keeper making a couple of splendid saves from substitute Kingsford Adjei and Ben Miller.

In a grandstand finish James Dance put Rugby Town back in the game when he fired home from close range to make the score 4-3 and Westfields then had to stand late pressure as the visitors came all-out for an equaliser.

James Febery twice headed clear dangerous crosses as Westfields worked hard to retain their lead and secure 3 vital points on the last home game of the season.

After the match Westfields’ Supporters’ Player of the Year was presented on the steps of the pavilion by Westfields’ supporter Mr John Tutton with the results going:

In 4th place Aidan Thomas
3rd place Kane Kahaki
2nd place Craig Jones
And the winner of the Westfields 2017/2018 Supporters’ Player of the Year was Sam Plane, the Westfields left-back who’s been almost ever present throughout the season.
