WESTFIELDS BACK TO WINNING WAYS
Westfields got back to winning ways on Saturday, after having 2 defeats in the last 7 days at Romulus in the FA Cup and at Highgate in the Midland Football League, when they overcame Shepshed Dynamo 4-1 in a Midland Football League Premier Division game at allpay.park.
The visitors, who completed a league double over Westfields last season, had a busy afternoon and it was only the agility of Brandon Ganley in the Shepshed goal who kept the score-line down with a series of brilliant saves.
Westfields were fortunate to take the lead early on when a penalty was given for hand-ball and Ben Miller dispatched the ball low into the left-hand corner of the net to give Westfields an early lead.
Ganley then made a flying save to keep out a Jamie Molyneux shot from the edge of the box before Molyneux again was in the thick of things when Ganley saved at point-blank range but the ball ran free to Ben Hayes who was “Johnny on the spot” and slammed home the rebound to put Westfields into a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval.
After the break Shepshed came back into the game and pulled a goal back to make it a closely-fought game and then Ian Havard in the Westfields goal produced a brilliant save with a one-on-one situation to keep Westfields in front as the visitors seemed to be able to draw level.
Ganley at the other end then brilliantly saved from a thunderbolt from Ben Miller before Westfields had a great chance of increasing the lead when from an Alex Hainault corner Paul Hurrell headed wide of the goal from 6yds.
However, Westfields increased the lead when substitute Keanu Cooper made a great break from inside his own half and rode 3 tackles and set up a great chance for Jamie Molyneux who finished it in style from 12yds.
Westfields then gained confidence and moved forward well and snatched a further goal when Craig Jones set up a chance for Keanu Cooper who slotted the ball home with a shot which tucked itself inside the far post to give Westfields a 4-1 lead and a tremendous finish to the game in which they played extremely well against a never-say-die Shepshed side.
These valuable 3 points hoisted Westfields up into 4th position and they now meet another high-flying team on Tuesday night when they visit AFC Wulfrunians and on Saturday travel to Nottingham for the match against Dunkirk and return to allpay.park on August Bank Holiday Monday, kick-off 3pm, v Wolverhampton Sporting Community.
Westfields’ Herefordshire FA County Senior Challenge Cup First Round tie v Hereford FC has now been agreed by the 2 clubs for Tuesday 11th September, kick-off 7.45pm at Edgar Street.
