Westfields v South Normanton Athletic

MATCH REPORT - Saturday, August 12, 2017

Westfields 6 - o.g. 10, Hayes 23, 30, Thomas 48,50, Miller 88
South Normanton Athletic 1 - Hemagou

Westfields got their new 2017/2018 season off to a flying start when they thrashed visiting Midland Football League newcomers South Normanton Athletic 6-1 at allpay.park on Saturday.

In an afternoon of goals on a sun-drenched, beautifully prepared pitch Westfields got off to a cracking start with lovely flowing football when Craig Jones changed direction with a fantastic ball out to the right to Ben Hayes whose cross was challenged for by Ben Miller and an opposing defender and the opposing defender in trying to clear the ball sliced it into his own net.

This gave Westfields a 12th minute lead.  Westfields continued the flow and swift-moving passing between Sam Gwynne and Craig Jones created another opportunity which Ben Hayes dispatched to put Westfields 2-0 in front.

The visitors then came back into the game and Keiron Blackburn made a fine finger-tip save to deflect the ball around the post and keep Westfields in the game.

Westfields were causing havoc down the flanks with Aidan Thomas and Ben Hayes both with quick movements and it was no surprise when Westfields increased their lead to 3-0 when Ben Miller got on the end of an Aidan Thomas cross to put Westfields 3-0 ahead at the interval.

The visitors after the break were under immediate attack when Aidan Thomas put Westfields further ahead with a fine solo goal in the 48th minute when he raced down the left-hand side, cut in and lobbed the visitors keeper to put Westfields 4-0 ahead and then 2 minutes later Thomas again got past his marker and drilled a low shot to put Westfields 5-0 in front.

South Normanton could not believe their bad luck with Westfields’ clinical finishing as they themselves were a good, neat, tidy side who put together some good movements but were foiled by some good defending by Matt Sysum and James Febery at the heart of the Westfields defence.

South Normanton eventually did pull a consolation goal back to make it 5-1 but then Westfields regained their 5 goal advantage with the best goal of the game when Ben Miller broke away from a long clearance, held off challenges from 3 South Normanton players and then looked up and dispatched a shot into the top left hand corner of the goal for the best goal of the game and give Westfields a convincing 6-1 win on the opening day of the season.

Westfields now go to Haughmond on Tuesday night and next Saturday Westfields go to AFC Wulfrunians in the Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup, kick-off 3pm, and return to allpay.park on Wednesday 23rd August when they meet old rivals Lye Town, kick-off 7.45pm.
