Westfields v Sporting Khalsa

MATCH REPORT - Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Westfields 2 - Magee 33 pen, Moreira 73
Sporting Khalsa 0

Attendance 81

Westfields followed on from their fine 2-1 home win over Stourport Swifts on Saturday with a highly impressive 2-0 home win last night over visiting Sporting Khalsa.

The visitors were still in with a chance of promotion but had their promotion hopes well and truly dented by a very workmanlike Westfields side who fully deserved their 3 points and gained back-to-back Midland Football League wins.

Westfields opened well from the start and Craig Jones fired over the crossbar in an early raid and then Aidan Thomas also had an early chance.

However, Westfields snatched an early lead in the 32nd minute when Ben Miller was brought down in the penalty area and Mark Magee dispatched the penalty into the bottom corner of the net to put Westfields 1-0 ahead.

Five minutes later it should have been 2-0 when Aidan Thomas burst through the visitors’ defence but his close-range effort hit the post and rebounded safely back into the Sporting Khalsa goalkeeper’s arms.

The visitors then came back into the game before the break and a brilliant goal-line clearance by Matt Sysum cleared a shot off the line and then moments before the break Phil Glover also produced a fine saving tackle to deny the visitors an equaliser.

After the break Sporting Khalsa came at Westfields but Alex Harris in the Westfields goal made 2 brilliant saves to thwart the visiting attack and at the other end Matt Sysum went close with a header.

In an end-to-end game Westfields were then reduced to 10 men when Sysum was adjudged to have been the “last man” when he brought down Craig Bannister and was dismissed with a red card.

However, the 10 man Westfields side reorganised themselves and brought on lively winger Carlos Moreira, who has recently re-joined Westfields from Bartestree, and the winger was only involved for a few minutes before he chased a through ball and coolly beat the advancing keeper to put Westfields into a commanding 2-0 lead.

This signalled the visitors to hit back but again Harris produced 2 fine saves as he cut out menacing crosses and then dived full length to hold onto another dangerous effort from Khalsa.

With the minutes ticking away Westfields worked hard with their 10 man team and fully deserved their 2-0 win to hoist them up to 10th position in the league table.

Westfields now start another busy period when on Saturday they visit Rugby Town, next Wednesday they return to allpay.park to play bottom of the table Rocester, then over the Easter programme they are away to Coventry United on Easter Saturday and away to Worcester City on Easter Monday.
