SPORTING KHALSA GAIN REVENGE

Westfields suffered a 1-0 home defeat on Saturday when visiting Sporting Khalsa gained revenge for their 4-0 drubbing they received on their own ground by Westfields earlier in the season.

Westfields were depleted with the loss of twin strikers Jamie Molyneux and Aidan Thomas coupled with Matt Reeve, Ben Miller, Ollie Butler and the influential Craig Jones who were all side-lined with injuries.

However, Westfields’ new striker John Mills on loan from Bath City led the line and showed glimpses of what can be expected in future weeks as he was unlucky not to have put Westfields ahead and twice set up good opportunities for his fellow strikers.

Khalsa, who are also in the mix for a promotion place, were big, strong, aggressive and hungry to win the match.

However, it was Westfields who had the early opportunities to have gone in front when Mills put winger Ben Hayes away with a clear run on goal but with only the keeper to beat Hayes’ shot grazed the outside of the far post.

The visitors then took the lead in the 28th minute when Sean Williams received a ball on the edge of the box and weaved his way past a couple of defenders to shoot low and hard past Keiron Blackburn to put the visitors ahead.

Right on half time Mills worked a fine opportunity for himself wide right but from a tight acute angle his shot flew over the crossbar.

After the break the big strong Khalsa defence, in which skipper Tesfa Robinson was outstanding, kept an eye on Mills and there were few goal-scoring opportunities although Khalsa had a couple of opportunities themselves to increase their lead but found Keiron Blackburn in sparkling form and he twice made breath-taking saves to keep Westfields in the game.

Westfields did come back into the game in search of an equaliser but they also found the visiting goalkeeper in good form and he twice made good saves as Westfields went all out to try and force an equaliser.

However, the home side had to defend well and Paul Hurrell and Sam Plane both got in decisive tackles late in the game to thwart the visitors claiming a second goal.

Final result Westfields 0, Sporting Khalsa 1.  Attendance 168.

Westfields’ next game is away on Saturday at Boldmere St Michaels, kick-off 3pm.
